The book The Fish that Fled the Story with text by Maria João Freitas contains a sad story, but lucky enough, it is not over. Can we make it have a happy ending? This is a book to raise awareness about the consequences of overfishing and highlight more sustainable practices.
At the start of any project, I like to do research and find out more about the subject. This was no exception. At some point, I needed to go out on fieldwork to see the beach and the sea, but we went into a Pandemic State of Emergency, so I had to conjure up as best I could all the memories, some more recent and others from childhood, of summers spent by the sea, sometimes with family and sometimes with friends. I realised that I had a suitcase full of these memories.
This project offered me an excellent space for artistic exploration, mixing digital media with traditional techniques. I expanded the narration of the text, creating a village from scratch, managing to create all the illustrations in coherence with this space materialised in them.
