I worked in a duo with Afonso Cruz to create this book, which shows readers democracy, a complex concept that becomes visible and real here when contrasted with dictatorship. The book begins with an encounter between a boy and an alien, leading to an extraordinary dialogue about how each of them lives. In this project, we have created a natural and democratic world, a visit to prehistory and the origins of democracy, and another planet where aliens live under the rule of a dictator, workers oblivious to their own condition as servants, their minds clouded by the fog of propaganda.
One of the most exciting challenges in this book was bringing to life a variety of vivid and contrasting settings. From the depths of the forest to the energy of election day, from a crowd of passionate demonstrators to a conversation between representatives and citizens. I also had the chance to imagine an alien world ruled by a dictator and even take a journey back to prehistory, where the roots of democracy first emerged. It was an incredible experience to visually explore these moments and make them come alive for the reader.
